Why Street Fighter II' Champion Edition?
A: Despite being a great game, there's a notable discrepancy between characters, which causes most competitive players to choose their characters based on tier lists, rather than simply playing with their favorites. Even worse, there are some seriously broken chars in the game. Reducing the gap (or trying at least) between the chars could be a good exercise to bring more diversity to the retro SF2 competitive scene.
Is this an official game??
A: No, it's an unofficial fan game, not produced or endorsed by Capcom.
What are the main differences between the original game and the CRE version?
A: Bug fixes, removal of Bonus Stages in 2-player mode, removal of obvious infinite combos, corrections to the damage ratio of some characters, improvements to the low tiers (keeping the top tiers as they are, as much as possible), new char/stage colors and some new victory quotes.
Do you want to replace the original SF2CE?
No. However, it's interesting to have an alternative SF2 version available for those who want to test their skills in a different challenge, or even try an "enhanced" version of their favorite low tier.
Why haven't you added any new moves?
A.: The intention is to improve character balance using only the native features of this version of Street Fighter II. For those familiar with the online SF2CE scene, there are several players who manage to be competitive using characters who, theoretically, shouldn't have any chance of winning in a high level match. In other words, the features are there; they just need some tweaks.
So, are all characters now 50/50?
A: No. The most that can be achieved is to minimize the disadvantage of low-tiers compared to mid/top tiers by reconfiguring certain moves and readjusting the damage tables for each character. As mentioned before, the nerfs will be the absolutely minimal, but unfortunately, they are inevitable.
You said you would not nerf the top tiers, so why did you remove Bison's infinite combo?
A: There's no way to rebalance Street Fighter II without eliminating this type of thing. Infinite combos break the game because they prioritize execution over skill, especially simple easy-to-do infinite combos like Bison's or Ken's egg-beater tatsu, which is why they were removed.
You said "getting rid of obvious infinite combos", so are there no more infinite combos in the game?
A: Maybe. The cheap/dumb infinite combos were eliminated but there may be still some infinite combos in the game, howwever it won't/shouldn't be an easy task to pull them off.
Why the Bonus Stages were removed?
A: Most players reset the game during a bonus stage, disrupting the game's rhythm, distracting players, and hindering the game's progress. Not to mention that, strangely, even experienced players don't realize that, in a match with a diverse range of characters, the more you reset, the more the bonus stages will appear. SF2CRE is a game focused on online combat, so it's best to remove these bonus stages altogether. Even so, the bonus stages remain in 1P arcade mode.
Why didn't you change characters X and Y?
A: Because, in principle, they're already good enough. If they don't need any adjustments, then they'll stay as is. However, if any imbalances are noted, they may be addressed in a future version.
I love your hack, I want to send you some money as a form of gratitude. How can I do it?
A: Thanks, but it's not possible. SF2CRE is done for free for SF2 fans to enjoy, and there's no plans to make any kind of profit from it.
